Garment Evolution – The Jeans

Looking back into the jeans (a.k.a. Denim) history, starting back in 1873 (thanks to Levi’ Strauss and Jacob Davies), we can see lots of great styles.
The jeans became the iconic piece we know today, only in the ’60s, when the hippie generation lived completely in jeans. No other piece of clothing managed to be so strong in the history, starting as work clothes and all the way to the catwalks.
It’s almost unbelievable that in 1885 when the jeans have been used official as work uniform, you could purchase a pair with $1.25 and now the big name brands pay millions for advertise their jeans.
Even though, the first pair of jeans (Levi’s) for women appeared in Vogue in 1935, only 53 years later, in 1988, Anna Wintour succeeded to transform them in a glam piece, when she chose a pair of washed Guess jeans and a Christian Lacroix top for her first Vogue cover.

Calvin Klein was the first designer which made from an usual pair of jeans an irresistible piece, with his ad in 1980, showing a 15 years old Brooke Shields.

Since then, the jeans are the piece of resistance and lots of stars collaborated with big brands worldwide (Rhianna & Armani Jeans, Naomi Campbell & Fiorucci, Gemma Anderson & G-Star).
On the runaway shows of this season, the jeans are the key piece for a chic look. Dsquared2 shows outfits with a Wild West inspiration, Isabel Marant follows a boho style and J-Crew option is the smart casual look.

The variety and the styles of jeans you can find today are almost infinite: from the high waisted and flare or boot cut, washed and distressed to the skinny or the boyfriend.
The secret is to pick the right style for you!
